The explosion in Tianjin, China earlier today did a number on a Renault facility.

News is reporting “One-sixth of 6,000 cars parked at Renault warehouse destroyed. Firefighters still working to put out the blaze” The lot was 300m from the site of the massive explosion.

This was a port facility and likely other manufacturers had vehicle in the yard, as evidenced by the VW Beetles commenters pointed out in the last photos.

News is a bit sketchy, but CNN said “The state-run Xinhua news agency reported the explosion tore through a warehouse storing “dangerous goods” in the Binhai New Area”

Nope. I suppose it could be some sort of car storage facility or a processing center.

A fire in a facility where they keep inflammable and explosive products. According to the chinese earthquake surveillance centre, first explosion was equivalent to 3 tons of TNT, second one was the equivalent of 21 (!!).

Tragic incident...

I can see some conspiracy theorists blaming the car manufacturers for secretly plotting this, esp. with them suffering from the economic recession. I am guessing these cars are covered by an insurance policy and it would be covered?
